An initiative of the Hays County Arts Alliance (HCAA), Wimberley joins Buda, Dripping Springs, and San Marcos in hosting Plein Air painting events in Spring 2026, giving artists the opportunity to paint in multiple communities. Each community event will take place on a different date and at a different location, culminating in one celebratory exhibition featuring selected paintings from all four communities.

Plein Air Wimberley will take place at Blue Hole Regional Park on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The theme is “Water,” with activities beginning at the Swim Lawn along Cypress Creek. Artists are encouraged to paint nearby, though they are welcome to paint anywhere in and around the park.

The day will include plein air demonstrations and a Q&A session led by local artists at the Swim Lawn. Lunch will be provided, and participants are invited to enjoy the demonstrations and gather tips and inspiration.

What is Plein Air?

Plein air painting is the practice of painting outdoors, directly in the landscape, to capture the immediate, fleeting effects of natural light and atmosphere, using the French term for "in the open air". Popularized by the Impressionists, this method emphasizes spontaneity and sensory experience, contrasting with studio work by requiring artists to work quickly to render the true colors and feel of a scene before conditions change, focusing on landscapes but applicable to any outdoor subject.
