The Bold Beauty Project was started over a decade ago in Florida as a way to highlight women with disabilities and to celebrate their courage and beauty. A number of exhibits have taken place since then, including in Washington D.C. and in Philadelphia. Now the Wimberley Valley Art League is bringing it to Texas! Already, hard at work are many of the talented photographers of the Art League as well as some additional recruits. The goal is to build a body of about 20 large scale fine art photographs, and display them throughout the State, starting with Wimberley!
The plan is to show the photo exhibit at The Messina Inn in Wimberley for the “grand opening” on Friday, January 11th. Then the exhibit will move on to San Marcos’ Walker Gallery in the City Activity Center where it will hang for two months. During this time, the exhibit will also be hung at the Austin City Hall with monthly receptions throughout the year. We are beginning talks with the gallery in the Texas State Capitol and hope to display there in the April timeframe. Additional plans are to move the exhibit to San Antonio and other points in Texas as we surface availability. We are expecting a number of dignitaries will attend our openings and we are in touch with the Governor’s scheduler.
This is a big project for WVAL and will bring much notoriety to the League and to Wimberley. If you would like to help with this very worthwhile project, contact Bob Cook or Jan Fitzhugh. We will be looking for people to help with the logistics for the exhibits, being docents at the Messina Inn for 3 hour shifts, working as greeters during the receptions, helping to locate galleries in Houston and DFW, assisting Tom Wiley with public relations, and probably more tasks that we haven’t yet defined. Everyone can be included.
Currently Art League members are searching for more models of diversity, including age, race and type of disability.
